Biltong Storage Instructions
🥩 How to Store Your Delicious Biltong
Biltong is a natural product made from meat and spices, so it’s important to store it naturally too! Whether you like it dry or love it wet and juicy, here are our top tips to keep it fresh and full of flavour.
🔥 For Fans of Wet Biltong – This Is Essential!
If you love your biltong moist, please open the bag as soon as possible after purchase. Sealing it for more than 1–2 days can cause it to go mouldy—moist biltong needs air!
Here’s what to do:
Don’t leave it sealed. Open the bag and let it breathe.
Not ready to eat yet?
Freeze it immediately for later.
OR place it in the fridge in an open container and toss it regularly to allow airflow.
Dab with a kitchen towel to absorb excess moisture if needed.
✅ 3 Best Ways to Store Biltong
1. 🪵 Room Temperature (Short-Term):
Store in a wooden bowl covered with a cloth or paper towel. This allows air circulation while protecting it from dust.
2. 📦 Brown Paper Bag (Traditional Style):
Bought from a store? Keep it in the original packaging or transfer to a brown paper bag to let it breathe and avoid excess moisture.
3. ❄️ Fridge or Freezer (Long-Term):
Vacuum-sealed biltong can go straight in the fridge. Once opened, put it in an open bowl and mix it up daily.
Freezing? Totally fine! Biltong can be frozen for up to a year. Just let it thaw with good airflow, loosen the pieces, and dab off moisture.
🧊 Should I Keep Biltong in the Fridge?
Yes—especially for wetter biltong.
Keep in vacuum-sealed bags until ready to eat.
Once opened, place in a bowl and toss daily.
Use within a few days for best quality.
❄️ Can You Freeze Biltong?
Absolutely!
Freeze in small portions to avoid repeated thawing.
When defrosting, leave the bag open and allow airflow.
Use kitchen towel to soak up moisture.
Toss it around to separate pieces and prevent sogginess.
🛑 Avoiding Mould
Mould is more likely in moist, sealed environments. To prevent it:
Let biltong breathe.
Store it in ventilated containers.
Keep it dry and cool.
If you spot mould, remove affected pieces immediately.
🧡 Final Tip:
With the right storage, your biltong will stay fresh, tasty, and full of flavour until you're ready to enjoy every bite.
